Commitment to reducing energy use
Even small businesses can make a difference. Last year I reduced the carbon dioxide
emissions produced by my business by more than 2000 pounds annually. My goal is to
be a carbon neutral company in 2009 through major reductions in energy use and the
purchase of carbon offsets. Here are some of the changes I have made to continue to
reduce my energy consumption in 2007:
- Using all compact fluorescent light bulbs
- Switching from a desktop to a silver rated energy efficient laptop computer
- Using energy efficient settings on office equipment and lighting
- Recycling all paper manuscripts and office supplies
- Using office materials with a high post-consumer content
- Proper recycling and disposal of electronic-waste
- Purchasing carbon offsets for all business-related travel
- Planting a tree a year as a carbon sink
And in 2009:
- Planted four evergreens as carbon sinks
- Office to receive energy from solar panels in August
- Most manuscripts worked on in paperless format
